Cultural Details for Fothergilla gardenii

Dwarf Fothergilla

Flower Details:
White, fragrant, apetalous, look like small bottlebrushes. Lasts 10-14 days, April to early May.

Fruit Details:
2-valved capsule, not showy, with 2 shining black seeds.

Fall Color:
Brilliant yellow to orange to scarlet, often on same leaf, color develops late.

Bark Details:

Disease / Insect Problems or Resistance:
Trouble free.

Native Habitat:
Coastal plain species, edge of ponds or bogs. Introduced 1765.

Other Features:
Foundation plantings, good summer foliage, outstanding fall color.

Culture and Care:
Requires acid, peaty, sandy loam. Partial shade to full sun, good drainage.
