Helping Hands Volunteer Opportunity

Date / Time

Thursday, 05/02/2024; 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Summary

Volunteers join up with Arboretum staff to help with plant collection maintenance needs. Tuesday and Thursday mornings, April through October.

Full Description

A staff member will guide volunteers from our initial meeting site to various areas in the Arboretum, and lead them through the morning's project. Specific activity varies depending on season and maintenance needs, but typically includes installing new plants, light pruning, and planting bed maintenance. It may also involve other projects such as plant label assembly or off-site plant/seed collection trips.

The Arboretum will provide the tools needed for the task of the day, but volunteers may bring and use their own hand tools if they wish (please label with your name). Typically useful are hand pruners, garden trowels, weeding tools, shovel/spades, pitch forks.

Meet in the first parking lot to the left just inside the Arboretum's driveway entrance (look for the flagpole).

Lunch is usually provided for volunteers at the end of the shift.

These Tuesday and Thursday morning volunteer sessions are typically an outdoor experience throughout the entire time here. They may be cancelled for persistant steady rains, but will usually go on as planned if it is just a mist or a passing shower that will be gone in short order. Pay attention to weather forecasts and current radar; be dressed and prepared for the expected temperatures, the potential of being in the sun for several hours, and the possibility of wet/muddy conditions.
