Ornamental Characteristics:
Flower - Monoecious, male remind of strawberries in color and shape, .5-.75" long, attractive.
Fruit - Cones are oblong-ovoid, 1.25-1.75" pendent, purple when young, shining cinnamon brown when ripe.

Bark - Thin, scaling off in platelets, coffee brown in color.
Other Features - One of the most adaptable spruces.

Culture and Care:
Care Requirements - Prefers a deep rich soil that is both moist and well-drained; grows on limestone and acid peats.
Native Habitat - Introduced 1880. Southeastern Europe. Confined to a few stands in the limestone mountains on either side of the upper Drina.
Diseases and Insects - Subject to aphids, budworms and borers.
