Ornamental Characteristics:
Flower - Pale violet with darker spots and yellow stripes inside. 2" long, borne in April, vanilla scented.
Fruit - Ovoid, beaked light-dirty brown, dehisant capsule 1-2" long containing up to 2000 winged seeds.

Fall Color - Of no consequence as leaves usually fall off green.

Other Features - Similar to Catalpa, dense shade restricts grass growth.

Culture and Care:
Care Requirements - Transplant balled and burlapped in early spring into moist well drained soil, full sun or partial shade.
Native Habitat - zones 6-9, China, introduced 1834. Escaped from cultivation from southern New York to Georgia.
Diseases and Insects - Mildew and Twig canker have been reported. Wood tends to be somewhat brittle.
