Ornamental Characteristics:
Flower - Male catkin 9-12 cm;Fruiting catkin 15-24 cm. Capsule ovoid, 1-1.7 cm, tomentose, 3-valved, shortly stipitate or sessile. Apr-May.
Fruit - Seeds oblong, 3-3.5 mm. May-Jun.
Leaf - Huge, heart-shaped leaves up to 30 cm long and 25 cm wide with eye-catching rhubarb red veins and leaf stalks.
Fall Color -
Bark - Dark gray, furrowed. Branchlets yellowish brown or slightly purplish brown, coarsely robust, loose, angled, tomentose when young, or pilose to glabrescent. Buds ovoid-conical, large, slightly viscid; basal scale tomentose.
Other Features - In mid summer an established plant has masses of spectacular, woolly catkins which cover the branches.
