Friends of Boone County Arboretum is excited to announce the creation of an innovative outreach program that will allow students throughout the Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky region to benefit from the educational resources of Boone County Arboretum (BCA).
The Boone County Arboretum is a living outdoor museum with a curated collection of trees and shrubs, showcasing over 3600 individual plants on display for research and public enjoyment. BCA hosts a multitude of educational programs and tours for people of all ages. However, school field trip programs have been limited because so many schools lack the financial resources to bring their students to our facility.
Through the generosity of many private and corporate donors, we are creating a unique, custom-built, pull-behind learning laboratory. The Arboretum On Wheels (AOW) mobile lab is in the final stage of manufacture, and will soon be available to serve the environmental educational needs of schools, directly on their campuses. Lesson plan outlines have already been developed for grades 4-7, and the search for a School Outreach Educator has begun.
When teaching about plants and environmental issues, the ideal scenario is to have the students outside, immersed in the natural environment they are learning about. The AOW lab has been designed with that in mind. Instruction can be given from inside the lab, or from anywhere around it.
The "front" side of the lab will feature a classroom-style setup. On the inside will be a large whiteboard and desk/countertop for the instructor. Fold-down tables on the outside will provide space for student-use equipment such as microscopes and biology models. Custom cabinets on the inside will provide ample storage space for equipment and handouts.
The opposite side of the lab will feature a display wall and counter space for additional exhibit space and learning stations.
Of course, sometimes weather happens and students can't be taken outside for lessons. When rain, snow or cold threatens, the AOW programs are modular and adaptive, able to be taken to any room inside the school.
Signups will be starting soon for school visits in the second half of the 2017-18 school year. If you are interested in the Arboretum On Wheels program, contact us for additional information.
