Horticulturist
Friends of Boone County Arboretum (FBCA), a non-profit organization in support of Boone County Arboretum, is seeking a part-time Horticulturist.
This is a professional horticulturist position that works directly with maintenance staff in the field to assist in the organization and implementation of seasonal color plantings, arboretum and garden plantings, care and maintenance of ornamental plants, assistance in labeling plant collections, and management of the Arboretum’s computerized irrigation system. The Horticulturist will work closely alongside the Arboretum Apprentice and horticulture interns to collaboratively complete the workload and achieve project goals. This position reports to the Director of the Arboretum and assists in the development of excellent plant care standards and the planning of yearly operational needs for plant collection maintenance.
Applicants should have experience with and thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in growing a diverse collection of temperate plants in USDA zone 6, to include proper watering, spraying/ fertilizing methods, and the ability to recognize conditions of plant disease and infestation. Be able to train, supervise, and evaluate the work of others, communicate effectively with others using both technical and non-technical language, as well as work with and motivate other staff and volunteers on site. Applicants should also have an educational background that includes graduation from a horticulture or arboricultural program at an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree, or an associate degree with at least two years of relevant work experience in the culture of ornamental plants. A Kentucky Pesticide Applicators License must be obtained within the first month of employment if not already held at the time of hire; continued employment is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining this license. ISA Arborist Certification is desired within one year of employment.
This year-round, part-time position has a seasonally flexible schedule to meet the dynamic needs of the Arboretum. Rate of pay is $22/hr. Year-round.

Arboretum Apprentice
Boone County Arboretum is accepting applications for an Arboretum Apprenticeship.
This position reports to the Director of the Arboretum and plays a key role in the development of exceptional plant care standards while assisting in the planning and execution of yearly operational needs for maintaining the plant collection. In this role, you will not only enhance your technical skills in horticulture and arboriculture but also gain valuable experience in managing people and learning administrative duties by working closely with industry professionals.
A degree from an accredited horticulture or arboricultural program is desirable, along with at least two full years of industry experience. A Kentucky Pesticide Applicators License must be obtained within the first month of employment if not already held at the time of hire.
This seasonal position requires a commitment from March through November, with a rate of pay at $18/hr.

Arboretum Internships
Boone County Arboretum is accepting applications for Arboretum Internships.
This program is designed for students pursuing degrees in horticulture, landscape architecture, botany, or related fields. Interns will gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, engaging in a variety of job responsibilities that may include plant care, landscape design, educational programming, and more. This is a unique opportunity to enhance your skills, work alongside experienced professionals, and contribute to the beauty, sustainability, and research of the arboretum. A perfect complement to academic study; college credit is encouraged but must be arranged by the student.
Applicants should possess a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in plant care and horticultural practices, and conservation. Being a collaborative team member is essential, as the role involves working closely with others to achieve common goals. Additionally, students should be prepared to work in outdoor conditions and demonstrate adaptability to varying weather. A positive attitude, adaptability, and a willingness to learn will contribute to a rewarding experience at the Boone County Arboretum.
Flexible scheduling is available from 16 to 40 hours per week to fit academic commitments, allowing for a balance between work and studies. Staggered start/end dates: first positions to open start in March, last positions to close end in late November. Rate of pay is $15/hr.
