Native Range
Colorado to southern California, northern Mexico and New Mexico.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are red or red-violet. Fruits in erect cones, 3-6" long, 1.5-1.75" wide.
Leaf and Bark Features
Bark is smooth on young stems, old trunks are thick and horney with flattened, ashy gray ridges.
Culture and Care
Prefers full sun, deep, rich, moist, acidic, well-drained gravelly or sandy-loam soils. Tolerates light shade, heat, cold, drought, and poor drainage, but will not do well in clay soil. No serious disease or insect problems.
