Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size of 30-50' tall and 15-25' wide under cultivation, up to 100-130' tall in native habitat. Slow growth rate. Long lived, some are over 400 years old (ring count) in Olympic National Park, WA.
Native Range
Japan. Introduced 1861.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are monoecious, and of no ornamental value. Fruits in cylindrical cones, 4-5" long, green in youth and pale brown when mature.
Leaf and Bark Features
Evergreen: Bark is usually smooth, thin on young trees, often thick and furrowed at the base on old trees.
Culture and Care
Transplant in spring using B&B or small container plants, into moist, well-drained, acid soil. Best with high atmospheric moisture coupled with cooler temperatures. Do not tolerate air pollution. Cuttings have been rooted but percentages low. No serious disease or insect problems in landscape plantings.
