Native Range
Native to China, Manchuria, and Korea, Acer barbinerve, very uncommon in cultivation, is a small tree reaching around 30 feet in height.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are yellowish, in April.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves with pubescent veins on the undersides, hence its Latin name barbinerve, which means "bearded veins". Unblemished even in the hottest and driest of summer conditions. Bright yellow fall color. Bark is gray and smooth; young stems green-red; reddish, pointed, villous buds.
Culture and Care
Zones 4-8.
Strengths, Weaknesses, Other Facts
Highly shade tolerant, able to persist under dense shade for extended periods of time. May not be tolerant to extremes of heat and drought. Overall, a nice tree, with bright red stems and yellow fall foliage, which could add nice color to any landscape. It is a rare, trouble free tree that would make a fine addition to any plant collector's landscape.
Suggested Uses
Use as a small landscape specimen tree.
