Acer pictum subsp. mono // Painted Maple
Tree. Average mature height 30-40' tall and wide, rounded to vase shaped, spreading. Greenish-yellow flowers. Fruit is a winged samara. Simple leaves, arranged opposite, 3-6" long, with 5-7 short triangular lobes. Smooth, gray bark, broken only by irregular, shallow, longitudinal fissures. Prefers a good, moist, well-drained soil and a position that is at least moderately sunny. New leaves are bronze, bright green in summer and are resistant to sunburn. Fall color is bright gold with crimson. Grows well in heavy clay soils. Native to East Asia: China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Eastern Russia. Sap contains a certain amount of sugar; can be used as a drink, or concentrated into a syrup.
