Mature Size, Growth, Longevity

Average mature size of 40-60' tall and 30' wide in landscape, width roughly equal to height. Can be over 100' tall in optimal conditions.

Native Range

Native to Europe, especially mountainous regions, and western Asia.

Flower and Fruit Details

Fruits are winged samaras.

Leaf and Bark Features

Leaves opposite, simple, 3-6" across, 3-5 lobes, dark green on top, greenish white underneath. Dull yellow fall color. Bark is grayish, reddish brown to orangish, flaking into irregular, rectangular scales, exposing orangish brown innner bark.

Culture and Care

Prefers moist, humus-rich soil, tolerant of alkaline soils and salt spray, in full sun or light shade. Succeptible to a wide range of insects and diseases, specifically canker and borers in hot dry climates.

Dead wood can become a pruning and maintenance problem.

Suggested Uses

Use as a large landscape specimen tree, particularly in locations with sea or road salt spray.

    Tree. Spring leaves emerge orange-pink, becoming green splashed with cream and pink coloring with purple undersides - a stunning visual effect. Generally smaller than the species. Avoid afternoon sun to prevent leaf burning.
