Acer sterculiaceum subsp. franchetii // Franchet's Maple
Tree. Grows to 45' in the wild but usually much smaller in cultivation, as a shrub or multi-stemmed tree. Slow growing. Native to mountainous regions of China and Tibet. Rare in cultivation. Dioecious flowers in long yellow-green racemes. Female trees producing samaras up to 2.37 inches long, occasionally the seeds viable. Leaves are 6-10 inches wide, mostly five-lobed, however three lobed leaves may be present on the same plant. Tuffs of downy hairs on underside of leaves. Yellow fall color. Gray-brown and smooth bark. Prefers acid soil. Hardy to Zone 6.
