Average mature size of 8-12' tall and 8-15' wide. Attractive broad rounded habit. Slower growth rate on old wood, new shoots from base can grow 2-4' in a single season. Medium lifespan for a shrub, 20-30 years.
Native Range
U.S. Native — South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama to Florida.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white, brush-like, 4 petaled, 0.50" diameter, in June-July. Fruits are pear shaped, tan-brown capsules, 1-3" in length.
Leaf and Bark Features
Fall color is variable in its effect, yellow-green. Bark is gray-brown with raised light lenticels.
Culture and Care
Transplant container or balled/burlapped in spring, into full sun or partial shade, moist, acid, organic, well-drained soil. Zones 4-8. No serious disease or insect problems.
