Average mature size of 10-20' tall, 10-20' wide (occasionally 30' wide). Slower growth rate on old wood, new shoots developed from base can grow fast. Short lived.
Native Range
U.S. Native — Virginia to Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are salmon-red, in 4-8" long panicles, in April-May. Fruits are smooth capsules, 1.5-2.5" diameter, containing 1-2 lustrous brown seeds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Fall color is yellow-green but it loses leaves early, often by late September. Bark is olive-brown with raised light brown lenticels.
Culture and Care
Transplant container or balled/burlapped in spring, into full sun or shade. Zones 4-8. May have some leaf scorch in hot dry summers.

Attracts hummingbirds and bees. Flowers well in rather dense shade, best in full sun.
