Average mature size of 80-100' tall and 50-60' wide. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
Japan.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white, in 6-10" long panicles, in May-June. Fruits are pear shaped, 2" wide, with a rough exterior usually including spines.
Leaf and Bark Features
Yellow-green fall color. Bark is dark gray-brown, older bark becoming platy, exfoliating.
Culture and Care
Transplant balled/burlapped into full sun or light shade, prune in early spring. Zones 5-7. Susceptible to leaf blotch (serious), powdery mildew, woodrot, canker, walnut scale, japanese beetle and bagworm.
Suggested Uses
Use for parks and large areas, not recommended for residential landscape.
