Average mature size of 6-20' tall and 12-20' wide. Fast growth rate, 24" or more per year. Typically lives 20 years or less.
Native Range
Maine south to Florida to Louisiana.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers in March before leaves. Male flowers are slender, drooping, purple or brown. Female flowers are deep purple, in clusters of 3. Fruits are brown, in early August through late February.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves stay green late in fall, then change to yellow tinged with red. Bark is gray to gray-brown.
Culture and Care
Resistant to soil compaction and drought, but sensitive to salt.
