Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima' // Brilliant Red Chokeberry
Shrub. Grows to 6-8' tall and 3-5' wide, forms a suckering colony. White or slightly reddish flowers, about 0.33" diameter, borne 9-20 together in corymbs. Brilliant scarlet fall color, better than the species. Glossy red fruits more numerous than the species, persisting into winter. Birds dislike them because of the astringent taste. Leaves are waxy, lustrous, dark green, alternately arranged, 1.5-3.5" long and 0.5-0.75" wide. Grow in full sun, well-drained soil. Tolerates poorer soils. Susceptible to leaf spots, round-headed apple borer, twig and fruit blight results in gray, powdery mold over affected plant parts. Native to Eastern US, both wet and dry thickets.
