Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea' // Aurea Japanese Barberry
Shrub. Grows 3-4' tall. Perfect, yellow flowers, 0.33-0.5" across, borne on a 0.5" pedicel, April-May, usually solitary, occasionally in clusters of 2-4 together, not showy; hidden by foliage. Reddish brown bark, angled or grooved stems, glabrous. Bright red berries, 0.33" long, ellipsoidal, ripen in October, long-persisting, providing an excellent winter interest. Leaves are a vivid yellow in full sun. Fall color is quite variable, orange, scarlet, and reddish-purple. Easily transplanted, and best in full sun. Extremely adaptable, withstands dry conditions, tolerates urban conditions. Will not withstand extremely moist soils. Native to Japan, introduced about 1864.
