Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size of 5' tall and 5-7' wide. Medium to fast growth rate, a good rapid-growing hedge plant.
Native Range
Result of breeding work of M. Horvath, Mentor, OH. Result of cross between B. julianae and B. thunbergii. Introduced 1942.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are yellow, usually in April-May, not as showy as flowers of other species but still attractive, however has a somewhat offensive odor. This hybrid was formerly assumed sterile, but red fruits were produced at the Arnold Arboretum in 1991.
Leaf and Bark Features
Fall color is yellow-orange-red in late fall. Bark on young stems glabrous often with single-pointed spines. Relatively thick stems and branches have one-, two-, or three-pointed spines.
Culture and Care
Easily transplanted, roots readily, very adaptable, full sun to half shade. Prefers well-drained soil. No serious disease or insect problems, but verticillium wilt has been reported.
Suggested Uses
Use for massing, shrub border, & foundation. Excellent hedge plant because of uniform growth rate; perhaps the best barberry for hedging in Midwest and East. Makes an excellent barrier plant because of thorns.
