Betula populifolia 'Whitespire' // Whitespire Gray Birch
Tree. 30-40' tall 20-25' wide, avg 2' per year. Spire-like form, fine-textured. Male flowers 2-3.5" long catkins, borne singly at the end of the branches, rarely in 2s. Fruits small nutlets, 0.75-1.25" long. Yellow fall color. Native to the United States. Transplant B&B in spring; grows in the poorest of sterile soils; will grow on sandy, rocky, gravelly sites and also heavier soils; tolerates wet and dry conditions; full sun, intolerant of competition; chlorotic in extremely high pH soils Chalky white bark, non-exfoliating, marked with black triangles at the base of lateral branches. Resistant to bronze birch borer.
