Betula x 'Avalzam' // Avalanche Birch, Avalzam Birch
Tree. Medium-fast growing to 50' tall and 35' wide, elegant, 100+ year longevity. Flower catkins 2-4" long. Fruits are nutlets. Delicate leaves with yellow fall color. Young bark tan, then with pink tints, becoming white. Good resistance to bronze birch borer. Transplants well, prefers acid soil but is adaptable, tolerates moist to wet soil. Requires little to no maintenance. Hardy to Zone 5. Native to Asia, Imported to US mid-late 1800s by Storrs & Harrison Nursery, OH. Introduced by Lake County Nursery, OH. Catkins can be somewhat messy if placed near a patio/walk. Have outlived other Birches with which they were planted in 1800's in Ohio.
