Native Range
Species native to Japan; introduced in 1860.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are fragrant, ivory colored, but not showy. Produced in axillary or terminal clusters, March-April. Fruits are 3-celled capsules, with shining black seeds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Evergreen: Leaves evergreen; though may turn yellowish-brown in winter.
Culture and Care
Roots easily. Prefers cool, moist soil in sun to partial shade. Drought tolerant. Zones 6-9. Susceptible to anker, blight, leaf spots, root rot, sunscald and boxwood mite.
