Used as a specimen it makes a stunning vertical accent, in groups it creates a horizontal band of golden flowers that bend and sway in the wind. Also used as a border, hedge, screen, or as a backdrop for perennials. Confused with C. acutiflora 'Stricta'.

  • Calamagrostis x acutifolia 'Karl Foerster' // Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass
    Grass. Green leaves, medium-width blades quickly grow to 3-4' tall. Clump to 3-4' wide. Upright flower spikes emerge early, reaching 5-6.5' tall. Green with bronze tones, the blossoms/seeds change color through the season, to a golden color, bleaching to buff. Sterile seeds remain on the plant until winter snow brings them down. A hard frost may turn foliage orange-yellow in mild climates but some green almost always remains. Plant in full sun, moist to wet fertile soil. Tolerates dry/sandy/clay soils. Its ultimate size is directly related to the amount of moisture. Cut back to ground in early spring before new growth starts. Propagate by division in fall or spring. Zones (3)5-9. No known pest or disease problems. Long-lived. Native to Eurasia.
