Average mature size of 3-4' tall and 4-5' wide. Fast growth rate.
Native Range
Species native to Japan, introduced 1845.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are small, pinkish-lavender, 0.75" diameter cymes, June-August. Fruits are lilac-violet, small, 0.013-0.18", in September-October.

Yellowish-purple fall color, sometimes pink-lavender.
Culture and Care
Readily transplanted from containers in well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Cut back severely in late winter before spring growth for best berry production. Zones 5-8. Susceptible to leaf spot, black mold and various stem diseases, but none are serious.

Drought tolerant, very hardy. Long slender branches arch and touch the ground at their tips. Wonderful purple berries attract birds.
