Average mature size of 6-9' tall and 6-12' wide. Prolific suckering habit. Growth rate of 12-24" per year. Typically lives 20-50 years.
Native Range
Virginia to Florida. Introduced in 1726.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are dark reddish-brown or maroon to almost red, on current season's growth, up to 2" across when fully open, with a very fruity fragrance. Peak bloom in May, then flowering sporadically into June and July. Fruits are urn-shaped receptacle, leathery, wrinkled, brown, 2-3" long, in September-October and persisting through winter.

Yellowish fall color, not outstanding; leaves may persist late (November).
Culture and Care
Easily transplanted. Prefers a deep, moist, loam soil, but adaptable to many soil types including either acidic or alkaline soils. Shade or sun, but does not grow as tall in sun as in shaded places. Prune after flowering. Very resistant to most diseases and insects.

Flower fragrance described as sweet strawberry-banana-pineapple mix. Great variation in flower odor and it is best to smell flowers before buying.
