Tree. Grows to 40-60' tall and 50-70' wide. Growth rate of 12" or less per year. Flowers are yellow-brown with purplish center, not showy. Fruits are upright, solitary, barrel-shaped, stalked cones, 3-5" long and 2-2.5" across. Evergreen. No serious diseases. Gray-brown to brown bark, forming a pebble-like appearance on old trunks. Native to Asia Minor, best known for its historic stands in Lebanon, but attaining maximum size in Turkey. Somewhat difficult to transplant. Needs a good, deep, well-drained loam, in an open, sunny, spacious location with a pollution-free, dry atmosphere. Intolerant of shade. Var. stenocoma is the hardiest form (has withstood -25°F). A stately tree, more stiff and rigid than the species.
