Grows to 8-12' tall and 6-8' wide. Growth rate 12-24" per year.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are rosey purple, about 0.75" long. Usually in bloom slightly sooner than, and is actually more showy than, C. canadensis. Very handsome and showy in flower. Fruits are true pods (legume), brown-brownish black, taper-pointed and 3.5-5" long, in October, persisting through winter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are alternately arranged, simple, heart-shaped, 3-5" long and wide, leathery, and difficult to distinguish from C. canadensis. Fall color typically yellow-green, but can be an excellent yellow. Older bark brownish-black with orange inner bark peaking through, develops scaly condition with age.
Culture and Care
Transplant as a young tree in spring or fall into moist, well-drained, deep soils. Acid or alkaline adaptable, does well in many soil types except wet. Full sun or light shade. No significant diseases.

Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' // Avondale Chinese Redbud
Shrub. This cultivar produces a very showy profusion of deep rose-purple flowers, open March-April, effective for 2-3 weeks. It is more tree-like and has heavier textured dark green leaves. Can be rooted from cuttings. Cultivar originated in the suburb of Avondale, Auckland, New Zealand.
