Cornus elliptica

Mature Size, Growth, Longevity

Upright, spreading habit with an umbrella-shaped, dome-like crown, rounded over the top. Grows to 15-20' tall and 12-15' wide.

Native Range

Native from eastern Asia to western China. Introduced into the U.S. in 1980 by Ted R. Dudley of the U.S. National Arboretum.

Flower and Fruit Details

Similar to the Kousa dogwood, the showy parts of the June-July flowers are the 4 narrow, pointed, petal-like white bracts (1.5-2" across), whereas the small, fertile yellowish-green, true flowers are in the center and are less showy. Flowers last 2 wks. Showy, red, edible, berry-like fruits (drupes in globose syncarps), to 1" in size, attract songbirds. Fruits resemble those of Kousa Dogwood, looking a bit like a red raspberry.

Leaf and Bark Features

Evergreen: Thick, glossy, bright green, broadleaf evergreen (to semi-evergreen) leaves (to 3" long). Leaves turn purplish in the winter and will drop off in the spring as the new growth appears. Leaf margins often curl inwards in the winter. Leaves turn purplish in the winter.

Culture and Care

This is a Zone 7-9 plant which must be protected from cold winters and harsh winter winds. Mulch out as far as possible to protect roots over the winter. Plant in a protected, sheltered site. Full sun to part shade is best. Grows best in rich, moist, organic, well-drained soils. Good heat tolerance. This tree has no known serious insect or disease problems. Resistant to dogwood anthracnose fungus disease.

Evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage. Good wildlife value. 4-season interest: Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter. Not cold hardy.

Suggested Uses

A unique specimen due to its evergreen leaves. Also used in small groupings, and around homes, small patios and in lawns, as well as in shrub borders, woodland gardens, bird gardens and naturalized areas.
