Average mature size of 20-25' tall and wide. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
Virginia to Missouri, Florida and Texas. Introduced 1785.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white, not fragrant, May-June, effective for 7-10 days, borne in upright, 1-3" diameter, flat-topped cymes. Fruits are blue, oval-rounded, 0.25" diameter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves 1-4" long, grayish to dark green and smooth above. Fall color often green to brown although reddish purple is a possibility.
Culture and Care
Prefers moist, partially shaded situations, but adaptable. Fibrous rooted, easily transplanted. Zones 6-9. Generally no serious disease or insect issues, but scale may occasionally present a problem.
Suggested Uses
Use as a small street tree, container, or urban space tree.
