Average mature size of 20-25' tall and 15-25' wide. Large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree of oval rounded outline. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
Species native to central and southern Europe and western Asia.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are yellow, 0.16" diameter, occur in short stalked umbels, three weeks or more in March. Fruits are oblong drupes, 0.63" long and 0.5" wide, bright cherry-red, in July, edible.
Leaf and Bark Features
Purplish-red fall color. Bark becomes exfoliating, scaly, and flaky, often gray-brown to rich brown.
Culture and Care
Very adaptable but shows preference for rich, well-drained soil, sun or partial shade. No serious disease or insect problems.
Suggested Uses
Outstanding small tree for foundation planning and around large buildings.
