Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size of 30-40' tall and wide. Symmetrical canopy with a regular (or smooth) outline, and individuals have more or less identical crown forms. Moderate to fast growth rate.
Native Range
Native to central China. Introduced 1907.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white, produced in 2-3" diameter, corymbose cymes, in June. Fruits are globose, black, 0.25" diameter, maturing in August-September.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are opposite, simple, oval, 2-4.5" long, 1.25-2" wide, tapered at both ends, slender pointed, dark green above with fine hairs, more abundant on lower surface, 3-5 vein pairs; petiole-to 1" long. Bark resembles alligator hide.
Culture and Care
Full sun to part shade. Adaptable to soil conditions. Zones 5-7. Possibly susceptible to leaf spot, twig blight, or canker.

Use near a deck or patio; shade tree; residential street tree.
