Cupressus arizonica 'Blue Ice' // Arizona Cypress; Smooth Cypress
Tree. Grows to 40-50' tall and 25-30' wide. Medium growth rate. Monoecious flowers, male is yellowish in small oblong cones, female in subglobose cones. Powdery gray-blue to powder blue foliage. No fall color. Mahogany red bark on stems, exfoliates in scales. Fruits in globose cones with 6-8 flat or slightly depressed scales, each 1-1.25" wide and contracted into a short point. Scales are peltate which separates them from Arborvitae; their size separates them from Chamaecyparis. Prefers hot dry conditions with well-drained soil in full sun locations. Will thin out from shade and other competition. Subject to canker. Native to Central and Southern Arizona.
