Average mature size of 10-15' tall and wide, can grow to 25-35' tall in optimal conditions. Medium growth rate. Lives 50-100 years.
Native Range
Virginia to Florida, West Indies to South America. Introduced 1767.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are perfect, white, fragrant, 5-petaled, 0.2" across, in slender racemes 3-6" long and 0.5-0.75" wide, on current seasons growth. Fruits are 2-celled capsules, 0.5" long, rounded, maturing August-September and persisting into winter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Orange and scarlet fall color. Bark is gray-brown.
Culture and Care
Prefers moist, acid, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Zones 6-11. No serious disease or insect problems.
