Cytisus x praecox 'Hollandia' // Hollandia Warminster Broom
Shrub. Grows to 4-6' tall and wide, possibly to 10' tall in optimal conditions. Fast growth rate. Very short lived. Flowers are sulfur-yellow, in May, with an unpleasant odor. Fruits are 1.5-2" long pods, not ornamental. No impressive fall color. Angled stems with grass-green colored bark. Supposedly does not transplant well, prefers sandy soil, but good in infertile soils. Full sun to partial shade. Zones 5-8. Susceptible to leaf spot, and blight can kill this plant. The Brooms literally light up a landscape. They are effective in mass, and, like Forsythia, can be blinding when used in this manner. Not very popular in the U.S., but appear everywhere in Europe. Native to England, introduced 1867.
