Average mature size of 3-6' tall and wide. Slow growth rate.
Native Range
New Brunswick and Ontario to Florida and Missouri.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are pale-yellow, 3-4 in an inflorescence from each node, March-April. Fruits are oval drupes, 0.33" long, pale green or reddish, containing one large, shining, brown seed, ripening June-July.
Leaf and Bark Features
Clear yellow fall color. Bark is light brown becoming olive or darker, leathery and hard to remove.
Culture and Care
Thrives in moist to wet shady areas, prefers a deep soil rich in organic matter. No serious disease or insect problems.

Indians used the bark for bow strings, fishing line, and baskets.
