Fraxinus biltmoreana
Biltmore Ash
Leaf and Bark Features
Nearly identical to the species white ash, but the Biltmore Ash trees have more pubescent shoots, leaf petioles, rachises, and leaflet undersides than the straight species.
Culture and Care
Some tolerance to flooding. Likes pH 6.1-7.5. Emerald Ash Borer kills it.
Strengths, Weaknesses, Other Facts
Attracts songbirds and butterflies. Serves as a larval host to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Hickory Hairstreak, Mourning Cloak, Red-spotted purple, Viceroy and Tiger Swallowtail butterflies. Many sources list the Biltmore Ash as simply another accepted common name for the White Ash. Molecular testing has shown numerous differences, although the added pubescence of the Biltmore Ash is the most outwardly noticeable different trait.
