Average mature size of 30-40' tall and 20-35' wide. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Florida, and eastern Oklahoma.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white, bell-shaped, long, with the four flower petals fused together for about 75% of their length. Fruits are oblong or obovoid, dry drupes, 4-winged, 1-1.5" long, green changing to light brown, and containing 2-3 seeds. The 4 longitudinal wings give rise to the former specific epithet name "tetraptera."
Leaf and Bark Features
Yellow to yellow-green fall color. Bark is a gray to brown to black combination, ridged and furrowed with flat, somewhat lustrous ridges which develop into scaly plates. Intermediate branches are gray and streaked with darker vertical fissures.
Culture and Care
Prefers well-drained soils, rich in organic matter, high acidity. No serious disease or insect problems.
