Shrub. Grows to 20-30' tall and 20-25' wide. Medium growth rate. Perfect, yellow flowers, fragrant, with 4 strap-like petals. Fruits are capsules, 0.5" long, pubescent, dehiscing at the distal end, with 4 sharp curved points. Yellow fall color. Bark is smooth gray to grayish-brown. Prefers moist soil and full sun. No serious diseases. Native Canada to Georgia, west to Nebraska and Arkansas.
