Shrub. Needs full sun. Gets 4-5' tall and 2-3' wide. Bright red, 10" delicate flowers mid-summer through early fall. It is a hardy, shrubby perennial hybrid, mostly of various Hibiscus moscheutos (Perennial Rose Mallow) types. Tolerates clay. Leaves are very deeply cut, dark green or reddish-purple tinted, with purple veins. Used in the back of a perennial border or in a shrub border. Also used for naturalizing in wet areas, or at the edge of a pond or lake. Likes high heat and humidity. Keep moist. Zones (4)5-9. Deer resistant. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Needs full sun to light shade, & soil pH 6.1-7.5. A hybrid of swamp mallows native to wetland areas on the eastern U.S. seaboard, from MA to FL.
