Average mature size of 3' tall and 3-6' wide. Slow to medium growth rate. Very short lived (perhaps only 2-3 years).
Native Range
New Jersey and Iowa to Georgia.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are bright yellow, 0.75-1" diameter, late June-August. Fruits are dry, red-brown to maroon purple capsules, 3-valved, 0.33" long, persisting all winter, offering a good identification feature. They can be dried and used in flower arrangements. The seeds inside create a rattle-like noise when shaken.
Leaf and Bark Features
No significant fall color. Bark is light brown, exfoliating on older branches.
Culture and Care
Adaptable to many conditions, but performs best in dry, rocky, slightly acidic soils. No serious insect or disease problems.
