Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens' // Nellie R. Stevens Holly
Tree. FEMALE form. A hybrid between I. cornuta x I. aquifolium; dark green leaves, and relatively fast growing. Red, 3/8" diameter, rounded berries can develop without pollination, but best if pollinated by 'Edward J. Stevens' or a male Ilex cornuta. Zones 6-9. Extremely cold winters may kill this plant back. Grows as a large shrub or a small, broad, pyramidal tree. Originally grown from a seed obtained in 1900 by Nellie R. Stevens, from a hybrid holly at the U.S. National Arboretum. Glossy leaves.
BT007020 - BT007030 - BT007040Ilex x 'Rutzan' // Red Beauty® Holly
Shrub. This FEMALE holly is a hybrid of three different parents: Ilex aquifolium, Ilex rugosa, and Ilex pernyi. Medium size, spiny, glossy leaves stay dark green, even when bearing a heavy crop of bright red berries. Needs pollinator. Dense branching. Narrow-moderate conical form. A unique pyramidal/conical shape can be easily developed in its youth by simply developing a central leader, which will also increase its height. 'Rut-zan' name relates to its development at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
