Average mature size of 30-40' tall and 35' wide.
Native Range
Native to Japan. Introduced 1865.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are white with a faint purple line at the base outside, slightly fragrant, 4" across or less, 6 petals. Fruits are elongated aggregate of follicles, 1-3" long with showy red seeds, attracts birds.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves are alternately arranged, 3" to 6" long, obovate, entire leaf margins, and pointed apex. Leaves dark green with glabrous underside. Does not develop good fall color, although leaves die off yellow to golden brown.
Culture and Care
Transplant from container. Prefers rich, well-drained soil but excellent for all types of soil, including limestone based. Full sun to part shade. Prune after flowering. Scale can be a problem.

Good wildlife value. Does not flower well when young, and may take as long as 30 years to reach full flowering potential.
Suggested Uses
Use as a specimen or patio tree.
