Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size of 25-35' tall and 20-25' wide. Habit is open and gaunt. Fastest growing of the large leaf magnolias.
Native Range
Japan. Introduced 1865.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are creamy white, 8", strongly scented, May-June, containing a central mass of purplish red stamens. Fruits are aggregate of follicles, red, cone-shaped, 5-8" long, 2.5" wide.
Leaf and Bark Features
Leaves in a pseudo-whorl at the tips of the branches. Bark is a handsome gray.
Culture and Care
Best if planted in open areas to allow for its open habit. Zones 5-7(8).
