Average mature size of 15-30' tall and 15-20' wide. Reasonably vigorous growth rate in an understory setting.
Native Range
Introduced 1752. Range from S. Pennsylvania to N. Georgia and Alabama and west to Central Kentucky and SW Arkansas.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are creamy white, 6-9 tepaled, 6-10" across, unpleasantly fragrant, May to early June. Fruits are cone-shaped, elongated, 4" long, rosy-red, maturing September to October.
Culture and Care
Grows in deep, moist, woodsy soil.
