  • Magnolia virginiana x grandiflora 'Maryland' // Maryland Southern Magnolia
    Tree. Slow-medium growing to 20-60' tall and 15-30' wide (smaller in north, larger in south). Short lived 20-50 yrs. Flowers similar to but smaller than M. grandiflora,14" diameter, creamy white, intense citrus-lemon fragrance, long blooming time in early June. Full sun to part shade, essentially disease free, cold hardy to -21°F, both parent species are native to U.S. in Zones 5-7. M. virginiana (seed) X M. grandiflora (pollen) by Oliver M. Freeman, USNA 1930. Named by Fredrick Meyer, USNA in 1971. Lighter green leaves than M. grandiflora selections, especially during winter. Smooth gray bark.
