  • Magnolia x 'Ann' // Ann Magnolia
    Tree. Grows 8-10' tall and 10' wide. Flowers 7-9 petaled, deep purple-red outside, white inside, in late March to early April. Aggregate of dry dehiscent fruits, 2" long, twisted, and usually with only a few fertile carpels. Dark green leaves, 4-7" long, 2-5" wide, lightly pubescent, yellow-brown fall color not appreciable. Hybrid between M. liliiflora ‘Nigra' and M. stellata ‘Rosea' or the reciprocal. Native to China. Zones 4-6b. Prefers a peaty, organic soil, full sun. Protect from climate, avoid south-facing sites to keep flowers supressed and avoid frost damage. Foliage is often tattered and mildrew ridden. Tends to develop water sprout line growths when stressed. Roots easily from softwood cuttings.

    Tree. Grows to 20-35' tall and 10-20' wide (avg 16' x 10' in 14 years). Canary-yellow, cup-like flowers, 3-5" across, fragrant, appearing before the leaves. Prefers moisture-retentive, acidic, organically enriched soil, full sun to partial shade. Hybrid of M. acuminata and M. denudata.

    Tree. Grows to 30-40' tall and wide, compact growth habit. Large, creamy yellow flowers bloom over a long period. First yellow magnolia of smaller stature. Fruits are aggregates of follicles. Yellow-brown fall color. No serious diseases. Prefers an evenly moist well drained soil, not tolerant of hot, dry locations. Sun to partial shade. Complex hybrid of M. acuminata subsp. subcordata 'Miss Honeybee' crossed with (M. acuminata x M. denudata). Zones 5-7.

    Tree. Grows to 10-20' tall and 10-15' wide. Flowers reddish-purple outside and white inside. Dark green leaves 4-7" long, 2-5" wide, lightly pubescent. Hybrid between M. liliiflora ‘Nigra' and M. stellata ‘Rosea' or the reciprocal. Plants grow best in full sun to light shade. Prefer loam soil with adequate moisture, will tolerate poorly drained, heavy clay soils or dry areas. Roots easily from softwood cuttings. Foliage is often tattered and mildew ridden, a genetically inherited trait, from M. liliiflora. Also, tends to develop water sprout-like growths when stressed.

    Tree. Fast growing to 30' tall and 25' wide, pyramidal form. Deep canary yellow, upright narrow petals open to a 5" tall flower. Fruits are aggregates of follicles.Yellow-brown fall color. No serious diseases. Zones 5-7.
