Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers late summer-early fall (August-October), with an extended, dominant central rachis & whisk-like tassels in the 20" inflorescence. Silvery-white, silky flower plumes are effective throughout the winter, standing up well to the ravages of winter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Deciduous: Leaves are pale green to medium green, broad (1.25"), and coarse textured. Lower leaves die and become unattractive in late summer. Stout stems, up to 2" diameter. Fall foliage color changes from green to reddish purple, then tan.
Culture and Care
Plant in average to moist, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun. May not bloom in cool or short-season areas. Zones 4(5)-9. Likes full sun to 1/2 shade. Grows best in fertile soil, but can adapt to various soils. Strong stems; needs no staking. Cut back old stems in March. Very few insect and disease problems.
Strengths, Weaknesses, Other Facts
The large, tall, showy flower plumes are effective throughout the fall & winter. Stems are strong and resistant to loads of ice and snow. 4-season interest: Spring, summer, fall, winter. May become somewhat invasive over time. "Miscanthus" comes from the Greek, "mischos" (stalk) and "anthos" (flower), referring to the stalked spikelets.
