Nandina domestica
Nandina; Heavenly-Bamboo (NOT true bamboo)
Mature Size, Growth, Longevity
Average mature size of 6-10' tall with a smaller spread. Medium growth rate.
Native Range
China, 1804.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flower buds pinkish, opening to white with yellow anthers, 0.25 to 0.5" across, 3-6 petals, May-June, framed by elegant foliage. Fruits are spectacular, bright red berries ripening in September to October and persisting through winter, often more showy than holly because the fruit is not hidden by foliage.
Leaf and Bark Features
Reddish tint in winter. Bark is reddish-purple when young, later becoming ugly brown.
Culture and Care
Easily transplanted from containers. Adaptable to extremes of soil and exposure, but prefers moist, fertile soil in full shade or sun. Best to thin out old stems every year or head back old canes. No serious disease or insect problems, an amazingly trouble-free plant.
Suggested Uses
Often used to effectively camouflage unwanted utility or maintenance structures.
