This large shade tree has an upright habit, reaching a height of 35-55' and a 30-40' spread. A moderately fast growing tree. This is a long-lived species, unless damaged by cold winters.
Native Range
Native to riparian areas of northeastern Mexico.
Flower and Fruit Details
Flowers are inconspicuous, cream to green color, monoecious, developing in the spring as the leaves develop. Male and female flowers similar, developing in dense, rounded structures, but borne on separate stems (peduncles). Rounded, bristly, greenish-tan fruits (multiple, globose fruit -- a syncarp of achenes) on long stalks (peduncles), 1" diameter, ripening in October, turning tan/brown and persisting all winter.
Leaf and Bark Features
Deciduous: Large, broad, alternate, 8" leaves are slightly lobed, with numerous teeth along the margin. Foliage is medium green on top, and nearly white beneath. Leaves pubescent beneath. Fall foliage color is yellow, orange or brown, depending on the weather. Notable Bark: Bark is showy, smooth to exfoliating, mottled gray to white
Culture and Care
Hardy to Zone 6(7). Drought and clay-tolerant, but grows best where soil is well-drained and moist or occasionally wet. Tolerates acid or alkaline soils, up to pH 7.5 or higher. Resistant to Verticillium Wilt fungus and bacterial leaf scorch diseases.

A strong-wooded tree with beautiful white bark, provides dense shade. 4-season interest: Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter. Not very cold hardy. Its pollen may cause an allergic reaction in some people.
